Major: Political Science at Haverford
Internship Organization: Pennsylvania Prison Society
Internship Title: Digital Media & Communications Internship
Location: Philadelphia, PA
What’s happening at your internship? We would love to hear what kind of work you are doing!
I create digital content for Pennsylvania Prison Society, with a focus on social media posts, videos and web content. I also make some basic data visualizations to help display metrics about engagement on social media and internal operations. In my free time, I take care of smaller administrative tasks like updating the website with media mentions and assisting with various assignments from my supervisor.
Why did you apply for this internship?
I have previous experience with nonprofit communications, and wanted to branch out from a writing-centric position to a role that would allow me to develop my skills in graphic design. I have been really grateful to expand my knowledge of tools like Canva, Data Studio and more in creating social media posts and data visualizations throughout this internship.
Was there anything special about how you found this internship?
I met my current supervisor, Andres, at a Tri-College career fair. I felt that the internship aligned with some of my previous work, as I had previously held internships related to nonprofit communications and mass incarceration. I’m really glad I got to hear about the opportunity in person before I applied for the position, as I got more insights about what my work with Prison Society would look like.
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced at your internship?
I would say adapting to working a 9-5 schedule in an in-person office was initially challenging. I’ve had to make a lot of changes to switch from my previous college schedule to this internship: fixing my sleep schedule, finding time to take breaks between work and preparing meals for the office are all new adjustments for me. At the same time, I am really enjoying having a fixed working schedule and adapting to life in the office.
